Cultural Leadership Tour of China

During the recent school holidays, twenty-two students from St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College embarked on an unforgettable Cultural Leadership Tour of China, accompanied by four staff members: Bridget Hartland, Luke Williams, Michelle Almond, and Daryl Blincoe.

Over two incredible weeks, students experienced the rich history, culture, and traditions of one of the world's oldest civilisations while creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

The adventure began in Beijing, where students stood in awe on the Great Wall of China, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Walking this remarkable feat of engineering was a truly humbling experience, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and a reminder of the determination and vision of those who built it centuries ago. Choosing to tackle the steepest sections of the Wall in 40-degree heat was certainly challenging, but the sense of achievement at the top made every step worthwhile. FaceTiming family back home from one of the world's most iconic landmarks was a moment many students will never forget.

While in Beijing, the group also explored the magnificent Forbidden City, wandered through the bustling Qianmen Street precinct, and enjoyed an evening at the picturesque HouHai Lake, gaining a deeper appreciation for China's fascinating history, rich culture, and architectural beauty.

Travelling by high-speed train to Shanghai, students experienced another side of China—one of dazzling skylines, vibrant nightlife, and remarkable innovation. Whether wandering through bustling markets, taking in the spectacular lights along The Bund, or enjoying panoramic views from the Oriental Pearl Tower, students were constantly amazed by the beauty and energy of the city. The sheer scale of China is difficult to comprehend. Towering skyscrapers, robotic waiters delivering meals, and cutting-edge technology sat alongside centuries-old temples, traditional gardens, and stunning historic architecture, creating a fascinating blend of ancient tradition and modern progress.

Funnily enough, our group also became something of a tourist attraction! Many local people approached us asking to have photos taken together, eager to know where we were from and what we thought of China. The hospitality and warmth shown by the Chinese people was exceptional and was matched by the friendliness, respect, and curiosity displayed by our twenty-two outstanding student ambassadors.

Of course, no trip would have been complete without a day at Shanghai Disneyland, where students—and teachers—embraced their inner child. Highlights included TRON Lightcycle Power Run, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the incredible Zootopia attraction, before the day concluded with the breathtaking fireworks and light spectacular over the Enchanted Storybook Castle.

Food became an adventure in itself, with students enthusiastically sampling a wide variety of authentic Chinese cuisine. While everyone discovered new favourites, sweet and sour chicken quickly became the standout dish of the trip! Regular visits to Dairy Queen also became something of a tradition, with plenty of ice creams enjoyed as a welcome treat in the summer heat.

One of the most valuable learning experiences came through interacting with local people. Students learned to navigate language barriers with confidence, using gestures, translation apps, and plenty of smiles to communicate. They quickly discovered that kindness, respect, and laughter transcend language, and that meaningful connections can be formed even when people do not speak the same words. Many also embraced the challenge of bartering in local markets, developing confidence, resilience, and impressive negotiation skills while experiencing an authentic aspect of Chinese culture.

Throughout the journey, our students demonstrated outstanding maturity, responsibility, and adaptability. Travelling internationally required them to be organised, punctual, resilient, and flexible as they navigated busy airports, high-speed rail networks, unfamiliar customs, and new environments. They embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and quickly learned that some of life's greatest growth occurs outside of their comfort zones.

Perhaps the greatest outcome of the trip was not simply the incredible places we visited, but the personal growth that occurred along the way. Students returned home with a greater appreciation for the many opportunities and privileges we enjoy here in New Zealand, while also recognising that the world is vast, diverse, and full of people, cultures, and experiences waiting to be explored. They gained confidence, independence, and lifelong skills, while forming friendships and memories that will remain with them for years to come.

This tour perfectly reflected the mission of St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College: encouraging our young people to step beyond their comfort zones, engage with the wider world, and become compassionate, confident, and globally minded leaders. We are incredibly proud of the way every student represented our school, their families, and New Zealand. Their curiosity, courage, and willingness to embrace every opportunity made this an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
