Grandparents Mass and Afternoon tea 2026

On Tuesday, 28th July, we hosted our annual Grandparents Mass. Year 11 student Tamsyn Bennett reflects on her experience below.

On Tuesday, as a school community, we were privileged to celebrate Grandparents’ Day with Mass in the Companions of Jesus Chapel. It was wonderful to see so many students accompany their beloved grandparents as we joined in prayer to celebrate the invaluable role grandparents play within both our families and the school community. We were lucky enough to have the Mass celebrated by Father Michael, who guided our community in prayer and reflection.

During Fr. Michael’s homily, he spoke about the importance of grandparents and the significant role they play in our lives. He shared a reflective story about his own grandmother, spoke about the communion of saints, and lastly touched on the importance of having a bucket list. We also prayed and remembered those grandparents who have passed away. When Fr. Michael spoke about bucket lists, he shared a story about a righteous man named Simeon whose greatest desire was to see the Messiah. Guided by the Holy Spirit, when Simeon entered the temple, he immediately recognised the infant as Jesus, the promised Messiah. This story really shifted how we should view bucket lists. Rather than simply being about a compilation of personal goals and dreams, they can become opportunities to discover Jesus and recognise His presence in the small, meaningful moments we experience throughout our lives.

After the Mass, all students and grandparents who attended were invited to have a small bite to eat in Manresa, and then to guide our grandparents through a tour of our school. Not only was the Mass a truly special celebration, but touring my own grandparents around the school was also a meaningful experience as I was able to show them where I learn, grow as a person, and strengthen my faith. In Manresa, there was also a table where grandparents had the opportunity to buy a book to sponsor. It was amazing to see so many grandparents take part in this opportunity and forever leave their legacy behind at St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College.

The afternoon was truly special, and we are beyond grateful to all grandparents, whether present or in spirit, to have joined us. And a massive thank you to all staff and students who made this memorable and enjoyable afternoon possible.
